Step 4 Port match intake to chosen gasket
Pg-3
Port matching is relatively straight foward. There will be three gasket / port size choices. The passenger car port, the CJ style port and the victor as cast port match.. When using a CJ runner manifold you can port match the intake port entry to the CJ style gasket. Blend the cj port dimensions about 1/2" to 3/4" into the existing port passage. Use care so as to not break through the push rod tunnel.
Using a light coat of paint or machinist dye, color the flange surface then scribe the gasket shape on to the flange.
My latest research has shown that with an intake manifold attached to the cylinder head, tract flow is increased by 15+ cfm when the first 3/4" of the port entry, right and left side, are perpendicular to the flange. This should be done whether port matching to a passanger car gasket or the CJ port gasket. Use caution as you near the pushrod tunnel. Radius around the tunnels aiming flow into the passage as it angles to the bowl. By the way a CJ matched straight entry intake port will flow better with the smaller manifolds attached vs. the standard port entry with the same intake attached. The relationship between port entry and manifold runner exit is critical. Do Not open the runner exit to a cross section any larger than the rest of the runner. Do Not bell mouth the manifold runner exit to match the port entry. Having the entry larger than the manifold runner exit does not in any way hurt flow. This is very important. updated 12-02
